General Description
Emirates Media Incorporated (EMI) is the largest and most diversified media corporation in the United Arab Emirates and through out the Arab World. The services Emirates Media Incorporated provides to the public includes print, radio, television, Internet, publishing and distribution.
Reincorporated under the name EMI on January 1st 1999, the company enjoys a proud heritage of over 25 years in outstanding media service to the UAE community. Publications such as Al Ittihad Newspaper, Zahrat Al Khaleej and Majid magazines were established early in its growth. While its radio division (Abu Dhabi Radio and Holy Quran Radio) were expanded several years later to include the popular channels: Emirates FM, The Sound of Music, Urdu Service station and Emirates FM English stations Radio 1 & 2. In television the Abu Dhabi Channel, Emirates Channel, and Sports Channel were established. Finally, in February 2000, the EMI’s Internet service was launched, providing yet another instant medium of contact with the public.
Emirates Media has been a pioneer in laying the foundations of the Middle Eastern media industry. Our name has become synonymous with advanced broadcast engineering and cutting edge technology. Our future outlook includes strengthening our position as a regional media centre and bringing the highest quality standards reflecting the UAE’s culture, political and economic status as one of the most influential Arab states in the world today.
EMI continues to forge ahead in its role as a media pioneer by facing and meeting new challenges by developing and using the most innovative and advanced media applications by taking a global position in the world of technology capable of meeting the increasing needs of the public, while maintaining its credibility and high professional values. In addition, EMI continues to concentrate on maintaining its role as national broadcaster and journalist, along with the development of its agencies to reach an ever-increasing number of public both in and outside the country, helping to promote information and culture in all its forms within the GCC.
In the ever-emerging world of information technology, Emirates Media has adopted a comprehensive plan enhancing all its branches of media sector. The proactive position of EMI includes raising the standard of its work force by obtaining the most skilled candidates and providing the best training opportunities to its employees. All of these elements exemplify EMI’s vision to be a leading media pioneer globally.
History
Emirates Media Incorporated (EMI) was set up on January 1st 1999 in keeping with Federal Law No. (5) for 1999 issued by His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.
The issuing of the law makes Emirates Media Incorporated the legal successor of the “Emirates Broadcasting Corporation” and the “Al Ittihad for Press, Publishing and Distribution” and gives it full legal status.
Constitutional Framework
Board of Directors comprising nine members who are chosen on the basis of their specialization in the media fields leads the establishment, known as EMI.
In the beginning of 2002, EMI adopted a new system, which is based on eight independent business units.
The restructuring is focused to allow for independent growth of its individual business units, to increase productivity and ultimately to meet the rapid demand of global technology.
These Units are:
Television, Radio, Publishing, Printing, Distributing, Technology, Production and Marketing.
A Leading Voice of Islamic Radio Channel Was launched in 1979.
Broadcasts 24 hours a day.
Covers the UAE, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and parts of India, Pakistan and Iran.
