General Description
The department teaches general Obstetrics and Gynecology to undergraduates in ten-week rotations during the second of the two-year Clinical Sciences Course. Core teaching is thematically divided into Early Pregnancy, Medical Disorders of Pregnancy, Labor and Delivery, Puerperium, Menstrual Cycle, Infertility, Urinary System, Genital Displacement, Infections and Oncology. Clinical teaching is by dedicated inter-active teaching ward rounds, students participation in patient management, deliveries and operations. There is exposure to teaching in basic IVF, Obstetric Ultrasonography and Radiology. The faculty also contributes to teaching in the following basic sciences modules : Developmental Sciences, Endocrine and Metabolism, Urogenital and Reproduction and Cardiovascular.

There is a Training Residency Program leading to the acquisition of the Diploma of both the Arab Board for Specialization and the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynecologist, England.



SERVICE

At both Tawam and Al Ain Hospitals, the department is involved in the provision of general Obstetric and Gynecological Services which includes regular on-call duties. Faculty contributes specialized services in Gyn-Oncology, Colposcopy and Management of Menopause.



RESEARCH

Department research activities can be grouped into three broad areas :

Pathophysiology of Pregnancy : Hypertension and vascular smooth muscle pathophysiology.

Infectious Diseases : Investigating the epidemiology mother-to-infant, Interspousal and Intrafamilial transmission of HIV 1 and 2 and Hepatitis C and E virus among the pregnant population in the UAE.

Urogynecology : With the Ano-Rectal Physiology unit in the department of Surgery and the department of Urology, investigating genital prolapse, pelvic floor disorders, and faecal and urinary incontinence in women. Testing the in-vitro effect of various smooth muscle relaxants on the detrusor muscle and studying the prevalence of urinary incontinence in the community.

Gynecological Oncology : Epidemiological Research to establish the prevalence of premalignant and malignant condition of the cervix and in Collaboration with University of the Orange Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa, to study the association between Human Papiloma virus and cervical cancer in UAE.
