History
The Department of Community Medicine was established in 1990 following the appointment of Professor Jock Anderson from Scotland as Chair of Community Medicine. He was succeeded by Prof. Owen Lloyd (1993-2000) and Dr. Graham Nicol (from 2001), also from Scotland. Members of the department provide expertise, teaching, research and service in the fields of public health, epidemiology, biostatistics and occupational medicine. Close links are maintained with other University Departments, the Preventive Medicine Department of the Ministry of Health in Al Ain, the Ministry of Health in Dubai, local and national hospitals, industry (for example, ADCO (Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations)), local and national municipalities, and local and national agencies such as the Road Traffic Police. We are also home to JSCAN, a continuing professional development activity, which scans and summarises all leading journals in the field of health care.
