During the early part of the curriculum foundation courses prepare the student with the practical and analytical skills of the designer ranging from freehand, perspective and computerized drawing to studies in colour theory and the history of interior design. Students can then progress into the core of the curriculum by developing their technical and theoretical base thereby applying their knowledge and creative talents in the areas of residential and commercial design, business practice and production information. In this way steady progress is achieved before the senior student is ready to tackle the more complex challenges of the final integrated design projects where the candidate′s interpretative, cognitive and innovative qualities are rigorously examined and tested.
The ethos of an American liberal education permeates through and beyond the physical and intellectual boundaries of containment, thereby reaching out to a wider world where breadth and diversity of knowledge are to be welcomed and accommodated alongside the focused vision of the merely expert. By selecting from a range of professional and general electives in consultation with faculty, the interior design student is actively encouraged to embrace a width of knowledge which in turn will help prepare the young graduate for a role in society beyond the vocational parameters of the consulting professional designer.
American inspired and international in its substance, the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design is a quality driven qualification, both academically and practically attuned to the requirements of today′s students, yet significantly relevant in the context of future expectations of society represented by employers, professional colleagues and clients. In reflecting upon the successes of this department in recent years, the program chairman acknowledges with appreciation the fine efforts of his predecessor, along with the contributions of past and present faculty whose knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm were recently and tangibly transcribed into this university′s first ′crop′ of graduates.
