General Description
The labour Trade Unions, according to the constitution and by labour laws, have one thing in common : their goal to defend and protect labours rights and interests in accordance with labor laws and related regulations .
History
The General Federation of Trade Unions was established in 1954 . Before 1967 war there were 40 trade unions, including 29 which were members of the federation. On january 1976 the Council of Ministers decided that the Labour Trade Unions had to be reorganized and reduced their number to 17, all of which were members of the federation. Since then, the number of trade unions which are members of the federation has settled at 17 members.
Constitutional Framework
The Trade Unions function in accordance to the constitution article N°15, and the article 186 from the Labor Law.
The Federation is supervised by the Ministry of Labor.
Mode of Election
In accordance to the federation ligeslations the (workers general Congress ) which comprises the total members of the administrative committees for the 17 members of the federation, with all the branches (28 trade union) should be held every 4 years . The general assembly has the right to elect the members of the Central Committee, who elect the members of the executive office, the president and vice president.
Since its establishment there were only 4 general Coferences held, the last was in 1995.
Mode of Finance
The Trade Unions are financed from three sources, the government (40,000 dinar/year), the social security fund (about 100,000/year)and members participations.
